In short:

Conservation detection dogs are being deployed as a way to sniff out and monitor native freshwater turtle nests along parts of the River Murray.

It's part of South Australia's first turtle management strategy which aims to get a better understanding of the species' decline and what can be done to protect it.

What's next?

The two-year project has been funded until June 2027 when the state's complete turtle management strategy will be published.
