In short

Japan has voted in favour of partially restarting the world's largest nuclear plant, Kashiwazaki-Kariwa, in Niigata prefecture.

It will be the first plant operated by Fukushima Daiichi's operator Tokyo Electric Power Co (TEPCO) since the Fukushima disaster.

What's next?

Japan expects its energy demand to rise, and the plant's restart could boost electricity supply to the Tokyo area by 2 per cent.
