Nathan Lyon's hamstring, Marnus Labuschagne's hands and Jamie Smith's hack — quick hits from day five of third Ashes Test

Jamie Smith is pilloried as "a dope" after an ugly dismissal as Nathan Lyon is injured and Marnus Labuschagne creates more catching magic.

Here are the quick hits from day five of the third Ashes Test in Adelaide.

1. Smith makes the most of the old ball

He hasn't been at his best this summer, but Jamie Smith is an undoubtedly talented player, averaging over 43 with the bat at just 25 years old.

The typically aggressive wicketkeeper batter was stodgy and uncomfortable late on day four, but was able to see off a stellar spell of bowling from Nathan Lyon to reach stumps on two runs from 35 deliveries.

But to start day five, with 17 overs to bowl until the second new ball and with England in need of a further 228 runs for a mightily improbable victory, the batter took the game to the Australians. He slog sweeped Lyon for a dominant six before dispatching a Cameron Green short ball for another maximum.

By the time drizzle forced the players from the field 35 minutes into the day's play, Smith had added 23 and England 34, as the faintest sliver of hope began to open up amidst the Adelaide clouds.

2. The Barmy Army rises as drizzle sets in

It was the the loudest cheer of the morning.

With England building steadily, a persistent light drizzle turned heavier, and the umpires decided to lead the players from the field.

With clear skies forecast for most of the day, it was only ever likely to be a short delay. But on the hill, where the Barmy Army had sung, partied and mourned in equal measure for four long days, there was something to celebrate.

As predicted, the stoppage ended up being a bit of a fizzer. That initial shower lasted just a couple of minutes, with the majority of the 40-minute delay being precautionary.

3. Wounded Lyon

England was punishing the old ball before the rain delay.

As Smith hooked another out into the deep, 38-year-old Lyon made a good diving stop at deep backward square, but was immediately in distress.

After throwing the ball back while on his knees, Lyon grabbed at his right hamstring and immediately signalled for a sub fielder to replace him.

He left the field with a trainer and was sent for scans. Cricket Australia quickly confirmed the most prolific wicket-taker in Tests at the Adelaide Oval would play no further part in the game on day five.

4. Smith's stupid, dreadful and dopey dismissal

The Aussie nerves were starting to jangle as Smith and Will Jacks neared a 100-run partnership.

Smith had clattered two sixes and seven fours, including two against a wayward Mitchell Starc, immediately before he tried to bomb another one over the leg side, only to send it up the chimney to Pat Cummins at mid-on.

"Jamie Smith, what are you doing?" former Australia fast bowler Stuart Clark pondered on ABC Sport.

"That is a dreadful shot. I'd expect that from number 11, I'd expect that from number 12.

"The game's there for the taking. [Australia has] got no spinner. That is just poor, poor cricket awareness. If Sunil Gavaskar was here what would he say? Stupid, stupid, stupid."

Over on Channel Seven, Australia's own member of the 10,000-run club, Ricky Ponting, did his own version.

Comm box cameras caught him saying "What a dope", with his brow furrowed and arms crossed, before he laid into Smith for the "dopey, dopey, dopey" shot.

His dismissal felt like a real reversion to the worst of Bazball after dominating with some proper cricket.

"I've just seen something very stupid," former coach Darren Lehmann said on ABC Sport.

"He just played normal cricket shots and then all of a sudden wanted to hit one into the Sir Edwin Smith stand off a length.

"That was just a Bazball dismissal. You just don't do that."

5. Magical Marnus strikes again

England had just moved within 100 runs of completing a miraculous, record run chase.

Australia, without its fourth innings trump card, was nervous. 

The Adelaide Oval was nervous.

With Jacks well set on 47, Starc steamed in again and flashed one across the right-hander. He drew the edge, but it was falling to earth fast and in an awkward spot between wicketkeeper and first slip.

And there he was, floppy hat on, flying to his left and nestling his weaker hand between ball and turf.

It was an effort to rival his game breaker on Saturday, and a piece of inspiration that Australia mightn't have expected to require heading into day five.

Relief was written all over the faces of the Australians as they moved within touching distance of retaining the urn.
