Bondi's antisemitic attack is the Jewish diaspora's worst nightmare come true

As emergency services scoured every inch of Sydney's most famous beachside location, Israeli politicians from across the spectrum immediately jumped on social media to voice their justified disgust and outrage.

They ultimately placed responsibility for the devastating massacre at the Jewish Hanukkah festival at Bondi on one man: Anthony Albanese.

And that was even before the prime minister had met with his national security committee to get a sense of what horrors had just been inflicted on the nation.

'A weak politician'

It is not the first time Albanese has faced such a free and frank character assessment.

Earlier this year, Israel's prime minister accused his Australian counterpart of being a "weak politician who betrayed Israel and abandoned Australia's Jews".

Benjamin Netanyahu has made a habit of hitting out at world leaders who do not share Israel's view of the world, particularly on matters such as its conduct during the war in Gaza and the prospect of Palestinian statehood.

While some may have brushed off Netanyahu's original words at the time, they take on a different tenor and tone now given the recent events in Sydney. The worst fears he was warning about have eventuated.

The Israeli prime minister, and a range of other leading figures, regularly conflate criticism of his government with anger at the global Jewish community as a whole.

The International Criminal Court (ICC) has issued arrest warrants for Netanyahu and his former defence minister, Yoav Gallant, for crimes against humanity and war crimes that the court found reasonable grounds to believe they bore criminal responsibility for.

There are many Jews who would baulk at being tarred with the same brush as a government and prime minister half a world away, fighting wars they have nothing to do with.

But there are, of course, elements of the community who do make that link — and Australia is sadly not immune to that sentiment.

Netanyahu is reflecting the psyche of a significant part of his Israeli community and the broader Jewish diaspora who, regardless of personal political views, feel threatened — and have done for many generations. This incident only serves to fuel that fear.

The threat, according to the Israeli prime minister, is heightened by decisions such as Australia's recognition of a Palestinian state, which happened in late September.

A balancing act

The inherent difficulty for world leaders is acknowledging and managing concerns of the Jewish community, while balancing responsibilities to question Israel's conduct when allegations and evidence of grave misconduct in the war in Gaza are presented. This all while addressing the genuine concerns about the humanitarian crisis relating to the Palestinian population.

In Netanyahu's view, someone like Albanese has failed the first half of that test, while the latter part is a moot point.

But they are issues that exist side by side — one does not extinguish the other. And they are often tested to the extreme when strained by events such as the Bondi massacre.

For now, it is a time for mourning and rallying around the Jewish community, which is grieving deeply. The mass shooting will be marked as one of the darkest days in Australia's history — and the world.

It is the deadliest single attack against Jewish civilians since Hamas fighters poured over the Gaza border fence on October 7, 2023, killing 1,200 and taking 251 people hostage.

The death toll in Sydney has already far surpassed the Manchester synagogue attack two months ago, where three were killed on Yom Kippur, the holiest day in the Jewish calendar.

And it has exposed serious global challenges, with Australia now on the front line.
