Threat eases from Stieglitz bushfire near St Helens on Tasmania's east coast

Firefighters have reopened the road to residents of a bushfire-struck community on Tasmania's east coast, as the fire between Dianas Basin and Stieglitz is brought under control.

The blaze has been contained, and fire crews and emergency services are working to consolidate the fireground.

On Thursday afternoon, authorities reopened access to residents of Parkside, Parnella, Stieglitz, Akoroa and surrounds, but caution that "if you choose to return to your home, continue to stay alert, monitor your surroundings for changes in fire conditions".

Tasmania Fire Service (TFS) issued bushfire advice for Dianas Basin and O'Connors Farm.

People in affected areas are urged to stay up to date with the latest alerts via the TasAlert website.

TFS incident controller David Casteller on Thursday said conditions had eased.

"There's minimal fire activity at the moment," he said.

"The weather conditions today [Thursday] are going to be favourable for our crews on the ground.

"Our other key focus is going to be dealing with some dangerous trees that were impacted by the fire on Tuesday night and clearing St Helens Point Road."

Crews were targeting the western edge of the fire, which is running parallel to the Tasman Highway.

TFS deputy chief Matt Lowe said teams assessed tree and power pole damage, with tree fellers at the scene.

Four helicopters, 22 appliances and 60 personnel from TFS, Tasmania Parks and Wildlife, Sustainable Timber Tasmania and the Tasmanian Aboriginal Centre were involved in Thursday's efforts.

The fire ignited on Tuesday afternoon and quickly escalated to emergency level, before being downgraded overnight.

It jumped back to emergency level again on Wednesday, then was later downgraded to watch and act.

Mr Casteller said two residential properties in the St Helens Point Road area had been destroyed, as well as numerous outbuildings and caravans.

Meanwhile, residents of bushfire-impacted Dolphin Sands, further down Tasmania's east coast, have been advised they can return to their homes with caution.

Mr Lowe said there would be heightened fire danger today in the south, and then into Sunday in the north and south.

"We'll manage those as we do, we'll stand up resources where required, and manage what comes," he said

Residents anxious to assess homes

Stieglitz resident Paul Donaldson said residents who had evacuated were feeling "a bit of anxiousness".

"The emergency services are not taking any chances, and nor should they," he said.

"From what I understand from talking to different people around town, they appreciate that and they fully understand that.

"I've got the advantage of having some security cameras around home, so when the power went on late [Wednesday] afternoon, I was able to log into my camera, and my house and shed is OK at this stage."

Along with her brother and a friend, April Bosworth has been ferrying people and pets, and necessities such as generators and food, to the Stieglitz boat ramp.

"Basically, it's just been a very stressful 24 hours.

"A lot of people were frustrated, which I totally understand, to get in back to their house and checking what's happened, what's the damage and what's going into the new year.

Ms Bosworth said at the height of the fire she could see embers from her home in St Helens.

"We could see the glow from our house at night-time, that's how big it was," she said.

"A fair few people did decide to stick around [Stieglitz] to try to fight it off, but a lot of people after that, they couldn't evacuate by road anymore.

"They went down to the boat ramp, there are a lot of caravans hanging around, large boats, classic cars that basically all just congregated down at the boat ramp there at Stieglitz."

Tasmania's fire and emergency services commissioner, Jeremy Smith, said this was a normal Tasmanian fire season.

"Our messages are that we'll have four or five fires that will impact on communities, so at the moment this is a normal fire season."
