A new report from property website Domain has found Australian homebuyers are increasingly abandoning their dreams of a freestanding house for more budget-friendly townhouses and units.

While Australians' borrowing capacity has increased, homes remain in short supply due to population growth, the report says. 

Houses in the inner ring of cities are priced way above buyers' search budgets in the 12 months to September 2025.
