Man, 25, charged after teenage girl hit by car amid Monday Meets cruise event in Burswood

A man, 25, has been charged after a teenage girl was left seriously injured following a car cruise event in Perth, prompting local car enthusiasts to rally together online to denounce hoon behaviour.

Caitlyn Dickson was hit by a car near the Burswood Crown Casino precinct on Monday night.

Police said a black Honda Civic struck a 17-year-old girl who was crossing Camfield Drive on foot just before 10pm. 

Ms Dickson was rushed to Royal Perth Hospital by ambulance where she remains in a serious but stable condition.

Major Crash officers charged the Ascot man with "dangerous driving causing grievous bodily harm — in circumstances of aggravation" on Tuesday afternoon.

He is due to appear in the Perth Magistrates Court on Wednesday July 16.

Earlier, police said the driver of the car was not injured and was assisting police.

WA Police Commissioner Col Blanch said the girl had "very critical internal injuries" including broken bones.

He said it appeared she was hit where cars were exiting the event.

"We are alleging excessive speed was involved," Commissioner Blanch said.

Camfield Drive is a 40 kilometres per hour zone.

Witness left shaken

A man who was among a crowd of at least 30 people who witnessed the crash said he was "disappointed" and "angry" with the driver.

Ayden Gowland said seeing Ms Dickson get struck was horrific and he had trouble sleeping.

"Shaky, no sleep, wishing she's okay," he said.

He said friends who witnessed the crash were in a bad state: "They're not okay."

Ms Gowland said the people at the event were there to hang out, relax and look at each others' cars.

"You just get the odd bunch out that try to show off, it ends up like this, gives us all a bad rep," he said.

Mr Gowland issued this message to the injured teenager and her family: "My thoughts and prayers are with you, I'm so sorry this happened."

Strong rebuke from car clubs

People had gathered in the Crown Casino car park on Monday night as part of an organised car cruise event that began in Jandakot earlier in the evening.

The group organising the cruise, Monday Meets Perth, posted on social media saying they were still “processing how to deal with the events of tonight going forward".

Earlier in the night when advertising the event, which sees car enthusiasts drive around the city together, the group warned "hoon's number plates will be reported and video sent to police".

The incident has sparked a strong reaction from members of Perth's motorist enthusiast scene, with several event coordinators denouncing poor behaviour.

A video posted to social media on Tuesday morning from a Perth automotive photographer and car detailing business owner called out what they described as "hoon behaviour".

"Everyone's got loved ones they want get home to safely. We don't need anymore numbers to be added to the tolls of deaths on the road. It's already high enough this year," they said.

"You are not only endangering your own life if you have passengers you're also endangering their lives. You're also endangering the people around you. It's just not worth it.

"Think about the people that you are affecting … your actions have repercussions.

"Keep the stupid shit at home. Keep it clean at the meets, don't bring dramas in the meets, don't be a dickhead at the meets, just be respectful."

Family still in shock 

On Tuesday night, Ms Dickson's family released a statement saying she was in the ICU receiving the best possible care.

"We can't believe what has happened and are still in shock," they said.

"We are so very grateful to the first responders.

"It is a miracle that our beautiful girl is still alive — thanks to your efforts.

Video shared online

Footage of the incident had been posted and shared on several accounts on Instagram, Snapchat and Facebook.

That prompted an angry reaction from Premier Roger Cook, who vowed to keep pursuing "post and boast" laws that aim to prevent people sharing and promoting alleged criminal activity online.

"Our post and boast laws will ensure these things aren't put out there in the public domain on social media, increasing the level of awareness and increasing their popularity," he said.

Commissioner Blanch said the ongoing "Operation Hurricane" monitors organised car meets.

"It's not that we don't support car meets, but what we don't support is reckless and dangerous behaviour that results in these tragedies," he said.

"It is the driving of individuals, generally on departure that is an issue, and that is what we will be clamping down on."
